One of the largest in Japan – 14 pot stills
3.5 – 4.5 million litres p.a. – busy visitors centre that has a bar with 120 Yamazaki whiskies
Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 – won Best Whisky in the World – Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible
This whisky was matured in Bordeaux wine casks and sherry casks, and finished off in Mizunara casks
Colour: Gold
Nose: Strawberries, red fruit, Cherry, Mizunara (Japanese oak)
Palate: slight fudge, warm citrus, Raspberry, white peach (?), touch of coconut
Finish: Sweet vanilla, hint of cinnamon
With water: buttery, creamy
Mizunara oak
- high in vanillas but very porous – susceptible to leaking & damage; change in maturation modified - most JW matured in bourbon or sherry casks and finished off in Mizunara casks
