Bempton Railway Station

1958 

Bempton Railway Station steam train heading to Scarborough

Photo above. Class B1 4-6-0 steam locomotive 61305 at Bempton heading north towards Scarborough in 1958. The train would have departed Hull at 5.10pm and was an express service which only called at Beverley, Driffield, Bridlington and Filey. In the background is Bempton station signal box, the line at this time was double track throughout.  Further details on the history of the B1's 'Antelope Class' locomotives from the LNER information webpage and British Preserved Steam Locomotives webpage. Built in 1948, 61305 was withdrawn from service on 21st October 1963, after just 15 year's service.

(A party of over a dozen children have alighted from the 1st generation diesel multiple unit from Scarborough to Hull, the crossing keeper is opening the wooden gates, the traditional railway fencing has now been removed and a flower bed created.)

The buildings were then used by a ceramics firm - note stone dressing around the windows and dentils under the cornice.
