This route starts at the village railway station, it gives the option of returning by train, or choosing one of the other walking routes back to Hunmanby to make a longer circular walk.
In the information racks on the Scarborough Platform (Number 2) there are leaflets for the Hunmanby in Bloom flower trail and the Hunmanby History Group 'Heritage trail'. Both have maps and describe the history of the village and location of the flower beds and open spaces maintained by the village community.
Photo above: Take time to look around the rear of the Southgate Bed & Breakfast at the hidden Cottage Garden and the flower beds, Market Cross and War Memorial, all looked after by the village community.
Turning right out of the station the new signs installed by Scarborough Borough Council point the way to the village along Bridlington Street, past The Folly on your left. The walk is through the heart of the village, which has good facilities. See link to what Hunmanby has to offer webpage
Continue up Church Hill, past All Saints Church on your right, and just before the K2 listed telephone box, descend on the footpath into Stonegate, look to your left at the finger post and Sebastopol Corner flower bed. The descent down Stonegate gives time to appreciate the old chalk houses dating back to the 18th Century.
Photo above: The Sebastopol flower bed, finger post and the mount with the trees is the remains of the Norman Motte and Bailey.
You pass Orchard Farm holiday village, and after going under the railway bridge, the route is now called Filey Road. The abutments on the left-hand side of the road is the railway of the old Filey Holiday camp branch line.
Meeting a road junction, the former route of the main coast road, cross this and head towards Primrose Valley garage with Spa Shop, handy for supplies. At the junction with the 'newer' coast road, cross this and turn to the left. Look for a footpath sign, on your right, pointing through a small plantation of trees, mostly ash. Sadly, these trees are suffering ash dieback, many have or are in the process of falling down. The footpath emerges to cross Filey Golf Course, the route across is clearly marked thanks to Filey Golf Club. Further details from Filey Golf Club webpage. The marking posts are great help to both walkers and golfers.
The path then descends into the ravine at Primrose Valley, and then climbs up onto the cliff top path. (Or you may wish to cross to the main tarmacked path that leads to the beach at Primrose Valley and walk along the sands to Filey, if the tide is out.)
It is a pleasant walk along the cliff top, with views in front to Filey and Filey Brigg, and looking back, the white chalk cliffs at Speeton. The route drops down the steps into Martin's Ravine at Filey (Toilets and Cafes and Takeaways are to the right on the sea front.) The walk climbs up the opposite side of Martin's Ravine and you can choose a network of paths through Crescent Gardens which are well maintained by Scarborough Borough Council, Filey in Bloom and Friends of Filey Parks. Further details from Filey in Bloom Facebook page and Friends of Filey Parks Facebook Page The walk passes the band stand, full details of concerts from Filey Town Council Band Stand Webpage. Then walk around the rear of the Evron Centre and up Murray Street, Station Avenue, past the bus station with public toilets and yup Station Approach to the Grade II* listed Filey railway station.
