2022 Match
We had 13 players battling it out for the magnificent Alex McFeat trophy. It was an incredibly close bonspiel with 3 teams all winning 4 ends.Team Derek and Team Laura were then tied on shots up (both scored+3). Team Derek was victorious on the final decider of total shots scored (8 shots versus 7 shots). In the end, it was Philip's incredible skip's draw to the button with his final shot to displace Team Laura's shot stone which was the ultimate clincher.
2021 Match
As this was played as a bonspiel, the result is based on ends and therefore Team Don (consisting of Don, Rhoda, Alix and Elaine) were victorious winning 5 ends, in an 8 end game. Well done Team Don.
We then adjourned to The Hollybank for a meal/Alan P 50 year RCCC medal presentation/19-20 prizegiving which was enjoyed by members and families.
2020 Match
We had a great evening’s curling with the usual ups and downs. On rink 3 Gavin, subbing for Rob, squared up to Richard and was 3 ends up before Richard’s team could get themselves into gear!! A rally by Richard’s lot saw them winning ends 4 and 5 but that was the end of the rally with Gavin’s team winning the final two ends for a final score of 5 ends to 2. On rink 4 Anne and Derek locked horns and by the 5th end Anne was up 3 ends to 2 — looking good kid. However — there is always an “however” — Anne’s team started to unravel losing the next 3 ends for a final win to Derek 5 ends to 3. Okay so if you are following this story we have a tie on 5 ends apiece. The rules are that Bonspiels are determined by most ends won then shots up then total shots scored — it’s in the Byelaws which I’ve just reread. So what were the scores — well the Gavin/Richard scrap ended 8-3 on shots whilst the Derek/Anne scorecard read 10-5 on shots. Now for the arithmetically astute we have another tie on 5 shots up. On the final criteria of shots scored Derek’s 10 shots to Gavin’s 8 determines a win for Derek, Don and Philip — well done. The wine is being ordered!! Commiserations to Gavin, Tom, Janice and Fiona for being so close — there is always next year!
2019 Match
Now the Alex McFeat bonspiel. On rink 5 Anne and Janice had a good tussle although early on Janice seemed to have the better game with Anne making a late dash for the tape. Nonetheless a win for Janice — ends 5-3; shots 7-5. On rink 6 a small disaster for Craig was unfolding — ahem!! Sorry Craig I need to tell the story. Nothing would go right for Team Craig of which I was member — by the start of the 7th end Team Craig was 6 ends down and 15 shots adrift. However a very late rally in the last end saw Craig win a single shot — how Team Craig cheered the avoidance of the dreaded whitewash. So you will have gathered that Team Tom (Tom, Alix, Rona, Gill) are the winners of the Alex McFeat Trophy. After the game the players adjourned to the restaurant for a well earned meal — Rob, Derek and John who were playing in the next session for the Murray game sat at a separate table awaiting the odd scrap of food to sustain them for their next game but you’ve guessed it nothing was forthcoming!!!
2018 Match
Well with a full compliment of players yesterday evening we played our inaugural match for the Alex McFeat Cup. Firstly I’ve got to thank Alex for providing such a magnificent trophy, photo attached. It's so shiny!
On rink 1 Mark squared up to Gordon and with the first two ends going to Mark it looked as though the writing was on the wall for Gordon. However with steely determination Gordon’s team clawed their way back into the game but not sufficient to hold the beast at bay with the final score for Mark of 4 to 3 on ends and 2 shots up. Note only 7 ends played — shocking!
On rink 2 Rob had a tough outlook as Anne’s team had not only one skip but three — who selected these teams!!!! Ahem! Nonetheless this was a nip and tuck game until the 6th end when Rob’s team started to falter under the strain leading to a win for Anne 5 to 3 on ends and 1 shot up. 8 ends played you will note — tick.
So with 5 ends Anne is the winner of the Alex McFeat Cup — well done to Anne, Fraser, Derek and Clare. Gordon presented the Cup to Anne immediately talking it back as it is too good for her to look after — not really — it needs engraving before the AGM when Anne will get it to keep good and shiny for 12 months.
Very low scoring ends on both rinks with either 1 or 2 shot-wins — maybe we could teach the GB men’s team something!!!
Afterwards eight of us adjourned to Gabe’s Diner for a well earned meal, good company and chat.
