Thorrington has an allotment site, useful for those with limited outside space, as an extension for keen gardeners or to provide growing space for those with children or pets using their gardens.
Renting an allotment plot isn't for everyone, tenants must adhere to a legal agreement and be aware that the site facilities provided are shared by everyone. Tenants take on a commitment to work the plot and maintain the pathways around it.
Plot holders have use of an on site water supply, an area for incinerating combustible material.
The allotment site in Thorrington is situated behind properties on Clacton Road and is also home to the tennis court. The land was taken on by the Parish Council in 1930 and today provides 23 plots. The site is accessed via a private lane, off Clacton Road, opposite the post office/village shop. Parking, accessed via a locked gate, is strictly for holders to use whilst tending to their plots.
The Parish Council set the terms and conditions and the fees. The annual rent and extra charges that make up the fee are reviewed every year at a Council meeting. Upon taking up a plot the Council ask for an initial deposit of £40 which is refundable on surrendering the tenancy in the condition required in the agreement.
Currently the rent for a plot is £50 a year for a full plot and £25 for a half plot, inclusive of charges for water. For 2023/24 the total plot fee was £50 per plot.
A meeting of the Parish Council and allotment holders is usually held in October each year. The next annual allotment holders meeting will be held on Wednesday 2nd October 2024 at 7pm.
If you would like more information or to take on an allotment plot please contact the Council via the Clerk. When a plot is not available you may have to join the waiting list. Please note that whilst we welcome applications from our neighbouring towns and villages the wait can be longer, when a plot becomes available Thorrington residents always have priority.
