Hey Jo - Just been looking at the new permissions structure. Well done, this looks much better and seems more logical to me now.
You may recall from a previous discussion, but I'm shutting down our "Members Zone" and creating a new (confusingly named) "Members Zone" that is part of the main site that is managed just with Permissions, rather than being a whole seperate site.
I disabled the "Members Zone" app, but I noticed that the old groups still existed. I started to tidy these up as I have too many groups, but that's when it all went a bit wrong!
In trying to delete a now redundant group called "Committee Members" that was associated with the old zone, I selected all members, and cleared them from the group. This instantly revoked my access to everywhere and I no longer have access to the site. I think it has removed me from some other groups too, and I seem to be shut out completely!
I'm guessing there are two things perhaps to look at here:
1) I don't think I should be able to leave the site without an administrator, or revoke my own admin rights without some sort of "are you an idiot?" warning. Better still if it relealised I'm an idiot and didn't let me do it all.
2) Even though I removed myself from the "Committee Members" group, I should still be a member of some other groups that have admin rights (I think), so I'm not sure why I'm locked out of the site. I think I've been removed from some other admin group at the same time which I think is a bug.
In the immediate, could you reinstate my admin access (oops, sorry!)
Then I think some testing to see how I locked myself out might be in worth doing.
Lastly, as I've disabled the "Members Zone", I'd really like to tidy up the user groups and remove the permissions groups associated with the now redundant "Member Zone". In fact, I've copied all the content to the main page, so any residual traces of that old sitecan be completely removed as if it never appeared in the first place. If you could help with that, then that would be great.
Thanks, Kev
Hi Kev,
I've reinstated your admin rights for your site, and yeah I'll look into how you managed to un-admin yourself. This shouldn't be possible (for obvious reasons!) but clearly there must be a way to do it!
Usually the only way you can remove admin rights from someone is clicking the Revoke administration button in the Members list, but maybe there's some other back-door type way to do it accidentally when managing permissions/groups? I'll check the logs and see if I can reproduce the problem on a test site.
At the moment there's no way for you to permanently delete a Private Members Area, though this is something that will be added (it partially works but isn't quite finished yet). This will include deleting the associated members group. In the meantime there should be no adverse effects from having the Members Area disabled in the Applications list. (when disabled it's impossible to access it, even by accident, and even by admins).
Thanks
Joe
FYI: I've now fixed the bug which caused you to lose your admin rights. So it should now really not be possible to accidentally unadmin yourself (or someone else)!
Cheers
Joe
Thanks Joe!
Just a quick favour, as I've removed the members zone app, could you also remove the associated permissions groups from my site?
There are two groups that are no longer valid as they are from the old and now defunct members zone:
i) Members Zone Members
ii) Committee Members
Thanks, Kev
These will disappear when I add the change to be able to permanently delete a Private Members Area (and then if you use that to delete your old Member Zone).
In the meantime I'm afraid you'll just have to ignore them!
Cheers
Joe
Hi Joe:
Our site (Froghall, Powis & Sunnybank Community Council) seems to have lost visible means whereby I for one can firstly log in and then edit/publish pages. Could you please investigate how this has happened? Very many thanks if you can and then please advise as soon as you can possibly manage.
Best,
Geoff Goolnik
Hi Geoff,
The login button can be switched off in some themes, which can be good in some ways as it prevents confusion for users visiting the site, but it can make it a bit trickier for administrators.
If you are struggling to log in or admin the site, then in the URL bar go directly to your site's homepage URL and add /admin on the end.
So for example for the demo site it would be https://e-voice.org.uk/demosite/admin
Or for sites with a custom URL go to: https://my.website.url/admin
The site will ask you to log in if you haven't already done so.
If you get a permission denied error after logging in then it means you have logged in with an account that doesn't have admin permissions on the site.
Thanks
Joe
