Farnham commons users asked to plan future

A series of events is being held in Surrey to ask users of common land near Farnham how they want it to be managed in the future.

Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) said Thursley, Ockley, Elstead, Royal and Bagmoor Commons were popular with walkers, cyclists and naturalists.

But the sites needed to be improved to meet government targets.

By the end of 2010, 95% of Sites of Special Scientific Interest must be in favourable condition for wildlife.

The Ministry of Defence uses Royal, Elstead and Ockley commons for training, but they are open for public access.

Traditional farming

The commons are internationally important for their wildlife and made up of rare lowland heath.

The habitat was originally created by traditional farming methods and today it is maintained by mowing, burning, turfing and grazing.

SWT wants to investigate which techniques would best contribute to the enjoyment of visitors while maintaining the right conditions for wildlife.

It will be distributing leaflets and questionnaires as well as holding special events.

Users of the commons will be asked for their views in Elstead, Shackleford, Milford, Thursley and Royal Common throughout June, July and August.
