5k summer series 2023 - results 14th June

I noticed a lot of ice-cream being consumed last night, but I think it’s fair to say that it wasn’t as hot as we had feared? Easy for me to say, of course, as I didn’t have to run it, but there was at least a light breeze, and the tree cover does make a huge difference.

After the bumper turnout of last month, we were back to more manageable numbers, and it was nice to welcome Hillingdon’s Edwards family back from their travels. Charlie Edwards stormed round with a convincing lead from the start. Unfortunately, last month’s winner Pete Flewitt was delayed at work, otherwise we might have witnessed a good battle at the front of the field. Burnham’s Patrick Butler yet again had to settle for second place, but he’s currently top of the points standing after the first two races. Third finisher James Lally of Datchet Dashers is well placed to win the M40 category.

In the women’s race, Sarah Gerrie of Ealing Southall & Middlesex took the honours again by a large margin. Jennifer Coleman of Burnham Joggers was next to finish, in her first appearance at this year’s series, while third-placed Kathryn Frost (W45) is lying second in the women’s points table.

It’s not all about the times and points, I think you’ll agree. There was a lovely friendly buzz around race HQ both before and after the race. I heard a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ from the Hayes & Harlington corner, which I understand was in honour of Fran Smith’s birthday. Club veteran John Shaw celebrates his 75^th this weekend too, I gather. So maybe that’s why they were all last seen heading in the direction of The Crooked Billet for some well-earned refreshments.

I know everyone appreciates all the work the volunteers do to put on these races, and I would also like to thank those runners who lent a hand here and there before and after the race. It’s certainly not expected, as a good warm up and warm down is important, but it was very helpful.

Next month’s race is already full, as you all know. I wish you all success in your various races between now and then.
