Langley Park Races

Our final race of 2019 took place on a lovely summer's evening with just a sprinkle of cooling rain before the start.

Charlie Edwards of Hillingdon and Patrick Butler of Burnham Joggers did battle for the third time to decide the overall  male winner of the series. Charlie just held the lead to scoop the title, while Patrick took M40 honours. They had some competition at the front of the field this time, though. Gary Nisbet of Hayes & Harlington (just back from a trip to Canada apparently) won the race, hotly pursued by M40 Mark Bruce of Chiltern Harriers. Mark Kencroft of Ealing Southall & Middlesex finished fifth to take the M50 medal, with Robert Wood of Oxford (M60) and Bob Hardman of Burnham Joggers (M70) claiming the other veteran awards. The junior male category was not contested until our final race, but 12 year old Casper Chillingworth of Wycombe was a deserving winner with an impressive time over this testing course.

Unattached W45 Joanna Edwards topped the women's points table, (someone should really attach her!), leaving Louise Prince to take the W45 category title. Claire Millbery of Metros was best of the W35s, while veterans from Ealing Southall & Middlesex grabbed the remaining medals, in the form of W55 Lynn Wilson and W65 Annick Hooge. Unplanned dental surgery the previous day had nearly put paid to Annick's chances, as she'd been advised not to run, but she was determined to complete the series and was set off early to walk the course (which she did in a very brisk time!)  Junior woman Chloe Breagan had been just one point ahead of Ella Owen after the first two races but clinched the title by doing what we all aim to do: improve in every race!

Thanks to all the volunteers who made this race series possible, to San Remo cafe for staying open late so we can enjoy post-race refreshments, and to the runners who make it such a friendly and enjoyable event. As usual, the race proceeds were donated to charity: the Friends of Langley Park, who support the race every year, and this year also to Iver Environment Centre, who do such great educational work. The Centre isn't normally open to the public, but it's well worth a visit and it opens on Saturday 27th July as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Click here for more details of that.
