Now on the live site is a significant update to the Photo Album app. The key changes are:

  • YouTube Videos - you can now add YouTube videos into your photo albums, the appear in the photo grids and in the Photo Album includelet.
  • Control the grid and aspect ratio - there's an admin settings page that lets you configure the grid size aspect ratio of thumbnail images.
  • Cleaner navigation - admin actions (Add, Edit, Permissions, Delete) are now in a dropdown menu rather than a row of buttons cluttering the page
  • Folder reordering - previously this was always alphabetical, now you can set it yourself
  • Edit Album does everything - editing an album's name/description, moving it to a different folder, bulk-editing all its photos, and setting the cover photo are all on one page instead of spread across several separate pages
  • Edit Folder does everything - rename, move to a different folder, and reorder contents (including a Sort Alphabetically button) all in one place
  • Better photo viewer - photos now display in a neat panel with title and description below; Previous and Next navigation is clearer, and there's an Edit Photo button for admins
  • Improved photo editing - rotate CCW/CW with a live preview, set the album cover, and move a photo to a different album all from the single photo edit page
  • Photo and folder counts - album and folder thumbnails now show a count badge so you can see at a glance how many items they contain
  • Reordering - drag (or use up/down buttons) to reorder photos within an album, or albums/folders within a folder.

I have also updated the documentation page for photo albums to cover the changes - though hopefully they are intuitive enough for you not to need them!

Please have a play with it and let me know how you get on. I'd be interested to get feedback before it goes live.

Thanks

Joe

This is very welcome. I have had a play on the test site.

The first thing I noticed is that my albums appear in a bit of a weird order on the test site so I guess there will be a reordering of everyones albums when it goes live. This might be useful to avoid.

The second thing I noticed is that not all the photo album name is being displayed. It seems now restricted to a single line whereas the old albums could go multiline. This will effectively force short names for album titles.

For me the biggy would be adding the ability to have video clips to albums so it becomes a media album rather than just photos.

Thanks as ever for all your work.

Graham

Hi Graham, thanks for the feedback!

Folders are now manually reorderable rather than forced into alphabetical order (Edit Folder from the three dots menu). However, as you say, this meant that folders were appearing jumbled up (i.e., in the order in which things were created). I've now done a one-time fix on this to set the sorting on all existing photo folders. From now on you'll need to order them yourself as you see fit!

I've also adjusted the CSS so that we get more lines on the album names again.

The thing about video clips is worth exploring a bit more. Are you thinking that you'd like to upload videos into e-voice directly (noting the max 100MB file size limit), or would you want to show YouTube (or other already hosted videos) as part of an album?

I can see there is value in either option, but would like to understand what you had in mind. The upload method is probably better if you have short/small videos that you want to add, but the YouTube option could be good if you want big videos with the added editing/hosting that YouTube offer.

Thanks!

Joe

Thanks Joe, that looks good.

In terms of video, I store the originals on YouTube due to hitting the file size limit when I was storing them in the assets library.

Hi Graham,

This might be your lucky day!

I've now also added the ability to add YouTube videos into photo albums (still test site only for now). Go to Add Video in an album and add the YouTube video URL or video id in there.

It seems to work for me, e.g., in the Kittens album, and in the Photo Album includelet.

Thanks

Joe

All the Photo Album app changes, including adding YouTube videos in albums and controlling the aspect ratio of the preview thumbnails, are now live on e-voice.

Please let me know if you run into any issues with it.

You can ask Voicebot for further details!

Enjoy!

I have got one album which has duplicate photos in that I have hidden the duplicates and the resultant layout looks a bit weird:

Check out:

There is a second page which has two photos which look like they should be able to fit in the first page.

Ah yes there was a bug in calculating the number of thumbnails per page with lots of hidden pictures. I've now fixed this.

I've also added a Thumbnails per page setting to the photo albums settings page, as well as the other grid options, should you find 24 not to your liking!

Thanks

Joe
