Having created a site that currently contains all the vital information on the home page, is there any way I could hide the other pages that I had to create, in order to make a subset of their content appear on the home page, or is there a way I could have created the home page content without creating the other pages.

You can remove applications from the navigation, using the settings on the Applications page in the Content Management tab.
