Hi Peter,

You no longer invite to the Private Area of a site - you now invite them from the Users page for your main site, then from there you can add them to the Private Area.

This change was made relatively recently to make managing Private Areas simpler. (as it was a mess that you had to independently invite users to your main site and to the private area)
