Hi,

Just trying to get into our website today and it's coming up with an error.  It's Charndon Parish Council.  Are there any technical problems today as to why I can't access our site?  Can you let me know as soon as possible please.  Many thanks.  Lisa.

There have been a few occasional performance issues since switching to the new hosting platform, which I'm looking into.

The error will have been caused by the application server being temporarily overloaded. This seems to happen when the web indexing robots load loads of URLs at the same time across lots of different Voice sites.

There are things I can do to mitigate this, such as restricting robots traffic to a few pages at a time so that there are always lots of resources left for real users.

Thanks

Joe

Ah, OK, I think I see what you're getting at.

I think you mean that the site isn't accessible if you use the domain name www.charndon-pc.gov.uk.

However, the site is working fine, as far as I can tell, using the e-voice URL: https://e-voice.org.uk/charndon-parish/

The reason your custom domain isn't always working is because it is is not quite set up correctly. It is currently configured as a web forward at your registrar from the domain name to the e-voice URL. Unfortunately this web forwarding doesn't work if you use https with your domain.

However, there is a much better way to do this, as mentioned in the Domain Name section of the documentation.

Essentially what you need to do is log into the site where you registered the domain, turn off the web forwarding, and instead use the DNS management to set up an A record for 'www' with IP address 83.136.248.56.

When Voice recognises the change it'll automatically create an https certificate for your domain, and the site will work great.

It looks like your domain is registered with names.co.uk - in which case there are some instructions here for setting up the DNS.

If you need further help with the DNS setup please contact admin@e-voice.org.uk directly.

Thanks

Joe

Still having problems getting into the website and I have tried today and yestreday.  The corrections whch you emailed about above, Names have done these for me and it's still not working!  I really need to get onto the website and get our agenda on there and also makes some changes as I have been having trouble with accessing the website all last week!

Hi Lisa,

Have you tried to log in to your Voice address too at https://e-voice.org.uk/charndon-parish/ rather than using your existing domain name? I sometimes find that when there are problems with domains the platform address is the one to use as it exists regardless.

Not sure if that helps but worth a try!

I managed to get in but it's gone again.  I have never usually had trouble with this website until the last week.  Is there something someone can do or take a look at it please?

The domain name isn't set up correctly, it's still pointing to the names.co.uk forwarding service.

It needs to have an A record set up for IP address 83.136.248.56 and references to the forwarding service removed.

Once done (and after several hours of waiting for the DNS system to update) it'll all work perfectly.

In the meantime you can use the e-voice URL as suggested to add new content.

Thanks

Hi,

Is that something that needs doing again in Names as they said they had coorected this?

Yes - currently there's an A record for the domain pointing to 85.233.160.22, which is the names.co.uk forwarding service. It needs to be changed to 83.136.248.56 which is e-voice.

Thanks

Names response and I have also checked myself:

I have checked the DNS and can only see the following two records.

Type: A
Hostname: @
Result: 83.136.248.56

Type: A
Hostname: www
Result: 83.136.248.56

There are no references to the forwarding server in here and having used a DNS checker, it has all propagated correctly.

Joe,

Did you get my email about the website?  Please can you arrange for the website at Home - Charndon Parish Council to be removed, and ideally that web address redirected to as per email
