Help for child refugees

We run programmes and services dedicated to supporting the children of refugees.

Crèche

We run a crèche alongside our ESOL classes on Mondays and Thursdays so that parents can take part without having to pay for childcare. The crèche is for babies and pre-school children.

Homework club

On Thursdays we run an afterschool learning project for school aged children. We support them primarily with English and maths and focus on homework and developing the facility to learn independently.

We offer opportunities to experience traditional days out and games played by British people, as well as celebrating the cultures of the families who attend the project. The club encourages children to make friends with other children from different backgrounds and schools. It is a safe place to be and parents and staff are present throughout each session.

Refugee Action Kingston has reached out to all the schools attended by young people participating in this project with the permission of the learners and their parents. The project aims to have a positive effect on resident communities such as schools, and our local community, enhancing their understanding and respect for the unique circumstances of people with refugee status.

Parents are offered ESOL support in the context of understanding the British school system; what is taught, how it is taught, and transition to secondary school or college. Parents can access support in understanding their child’s school report or written communications from schools.
