The Carousel functionality is good, but there are a few areas where it could be made better:
1) Move the buttons/indicators showing position in the carousel from the bottom to the top of the carousel
The problem with the buttons at the bottom is presentation on mobile devices. It is difficult as a designer to specify a depth for the items in the carousel that will fit on to all mobile devices. If the depth is too great, the indicators fall off the bottom of the display and are not visible. This is particularly important where Time between items is zero and cycling is performed manually.
If the indicators were positioned above the carousel items, they would always be visible to the user, regardless of the dimensions of their mobile device.
2) Allow increase in size of carousel indicators
Where Time between items is zero and carousel cycling is performed manually, it is difficult in practice to reliably hit the indicator to move the carousel to the desired item. This is due both to the size of the indicator and how close together they are, particularly on mobile devices.
Please could there be an option to increase the size of the carousel indicators. The small size can stay as at present, but the big size should be the same size as radio butons, and they should be separated by the width of a button. This would make manual selection of the desired carousel item much easier.
3) Allow swipe left/swipe right guestures on carousel button bar
This is just a 'nice to have' idea. Could it be possible to allow swipe guestures on the carousel button bar to move the focus of the carousel to the left or right. Each swipe should move the focus one item. The swipe logic should be circular, so that if a swipe right is done when focus is on the right-most item, the first item on the left side is given the focus, etc. This would provide an additional way to navigate to a desired item on the carousel.
4) Reduce the height of the carousel bar
This is a minor 'nice to have' item. There seems to me to be more white space betwen the bottom of the carousel item and the carousel indicators than really necessary. The impact is a reduction in content that can be shown in the available virtical area of the user screen.
There seems to be the same amount of white space as the height of the indicator button. Could this be reduced by at least half, which would allow a greater depth of content to be displayed.
The above suggestions are raised after implementing carousels on the CTAT web site. For an example please see https://ctat.org.uk/community
