1: Public Contribute permission won't save for Surveys

I have created a survey which is Enabled and Public, but visitors who are not logged in see “You don't have permission to respond to this survey.”

I have stopped the Surveys application inheriting permissions from the main website. I can tick Public → Contribute, but when I click Confirm, the page reloads and the Contribute permission is unticked again.

How can I allow people who are not logged in to complete a public survey?

Ah yes you're right, this sounds like a bug. We did prevent the granting of Contribute to The Public for a while, but this clashes with Surveys.

I have now enabled it to be set, so you can try again and hopefully all will be well.

There was however good reason for preventing this - e.g., if you allow public contribute to forums or photo albums they'll fill up with spam pretty quickly!

So, anyway, while you can now set your survey correctly, this needs a bit more thought before keeping this change permanently!

Replying to myself - sorry.

OK for now the only solution for surveys I think is to turn on the Public setting after making any other changes to the permissions. The permissions page will always unset Contribute for The Public, and I think we need to keep this for safety (for the spam reason I mentioned a moment ago).

However, when you turn on Public for the survey, that will automatically grant Contribute access to it.

If it's already Public, you'll need to turn off Public, then save, then turn it on again and save again.

I'll try to think of a better long term solution, but this will work for now!
