I want to allow registered/approved members the opportunity to post a new discussion. At the moment only the administrator (me) can do this. however registered members do not. I have obviously missed something in setting up the discussion application but am unable to configure this correctly. Please advise a new user on this.
There are 2 steps to creating discussions. The first is to create a "forum" within which users can create discussion topics.
The first step of creating a forum is an option only available to administrators. Once created a regular member can create threads or discussions within that forum without any extra permissions as can be seen here:
The reason we set up the system this way is to allow the administrator to create some structure to the discussions area and then allow users to contribute discussion topics.
