Headline: Storm Bram will affect the North of England through Tuesday and early Wednesday with strong winds and heavy rain.
An area of low-pressure currently developing in the Atlantic is forecast to deepen as it moves east towards the UK and move across northern Scotland. This system is predicted to bring a spell of very strong winds and heavy rain across parts of the UK and Ireland on Tuesday, clearing east on Wednesday, and the system has been named Storm Bram by our colleagues at Met Eireann this morning.
Forecast Details for Northern England:
- Rainfall:
- Heavy and persistent rain expected Tuesday morning, becoming lighter/clearing during the afternoon.
- Accumulations: 20–40 mm on hills, up to 80 mm on high ground in Cumbria.
- With already saturated ground, we may see some flooding.
- Wind:
- Storm Bram brings strong southerly winds to Northern England on Tuesday afternoon, strongest moving north and on into Scotland overnight.
- Gusts: 50–60 mph widely, possibly over 70 mph on exposed headlands and high ground.
- Winds ease across northern England overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday.
Heavy rain may bring some flooding and travel disruption on Tuesday

- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
- There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
- Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
- Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads
- There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
Please note that there are areas of concern across Northern England for river and surface water flooding on today’s Flood Guidance Statement (also accessible through Hazard Manager) for the rainfall event detailed above citing VERY LOW LIKELIHOOD of SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS.

As a precaution we will be setting up the emergency pumps at Sunnyside Terrace, Preesall and Ainspool Lane, Churchtown later today, should they be required overnight.
