Care for your soil
From food production to carbon storage to flood prevention, healthy soil is the bedrock of healthy living and mitigating the effects of climate change. Did you know what one tree branch buried in the soil can rip the Nitrogen from the surrounding areas, requirin the owners of the land to use fertilisers to rebalance. These chemicals then get into the water system and contaminates the rivers and water courses and destroying wild life.
One gram of soil can contain up to 10 billion organisms. In UK soils alone there is nearly 10 billion tonnes of carbon. Plus, healthy soil stores water, making the land more resistant to flooding and droughts.
There are lots of ways to improve your soil health, such as growing legume plants, which fix nitrogen into the soil, or adding homemade compost to improve your soil, store carbon and reduce waste.
