The Marsh Marigold
Inspired by World Wetlands Day at the start of February, this month's highlight is the glorious marsh marigold (Caltha palustris).
Marsh marigold is a member of the buttercup family. It grows in both sunny and shady spots of wetland habitats, such as in bogs, marshes, ditches, wet woodlands and the edges of ponds.
Marsh marigold is one of the first wetland plants in the UK to flower. Its epic golden flowers provide nectar for pollinators early in the year, including beetles, bees, flies, and the marsh marigold moth. It also has large round leaves, which offer shelter for frogs and other wildlife.
Marsh marigold is also known as 'kingcup'. Its Latin name, Caltha, derives from the Greek word for “goblet”... easy to see why!
