Steve Walker had a complaint upheld for the recent poor refuse collection service: 11/3/24

Dear Mr Walker,

Stage 1 Complaint Reference - 240308-000481

Thank you for contacting Argyll & Bute Council regarding the bin collections for Ford.

The Mid Argyll operations team are covering the lower part of Lochawe waste collection due to the on-going road closure on the C30 West Lochawe. This has required us to hire in a spare refuse collection vehicle(RCV) and make additional staff available to cover this operation. Unfortunately the recycling collections due for collection on the 29th February did not happen for a number of factors, firstly the hired RCV was diverted to Oban area to cover other vehicle issues there and at the time of the collections on the 29th February the vehicle was unavailable.
Secondly, due to the Mid Argyll team leader being off, the stand-in cover was not made aware of the current situation so this had caused the collection to be missed. This was on oversight on our part for which we apologise, steps have been taken to ensure this does not happen again.

Unfortunately, the scheduled green bin collection due on the 7th March was also disrupted. This being due to the unavailability of the hired RCV, it was identified first thing on Thursday 7th March and a plan was put in place to collect the general waste bins the following day was put in place with a plan to run a catch up service for the missed recycling collection from the 29th of February. We can confirm that it was the same collection vehicle but was carried out on two different runs with the mixed waste being collected in the morning, taken back to the deport and disposed off and then the recycling bins were collected in the afternoon. There was no mixing of waste.

This plan was posted on the council website on Thursday 7th March as soon as a vehicle and staff were confirmed. Recycling collections are due again this week (14th) and it is hoped that the hired RCV will be repaired, we have additional staff ready to cover the collections to ensure they are not missed.

With regards to community clear up of litter we thank the members of the public for collecting this waste, it's much appreciated. This can also be reported on our website by following the below form and our staff will be notified of the waste.

We apologise for the recent disruptions to the service and we can confirm that we have upheld your complaint.
