From the middle of the 19th century Bartlow (until the Beeching closures in the 1960's) was served by the railway. The village was at a junction of the Stour Valley line and Saffron Walden branch line and had it's own Station, with daily services to London. Although the railway is now long gone it's mark on the village is still clear to see.
Our thanks go to local historians Gilly Cunningham and Alan Hardy who have put together some information and pictures about the railway in Bartlow, giving us glimses back to the golden age of steam.
There are also some YouTube Videos:
One shows a journey taken from Bartlow to Audley end in 1961, not long before the Saffron Walden Branch Line was closed and another is a journey taken on the very last train on the Cambridge line in 1967.
There are also videos from 'Rediscovering lost railways' which look at what is left of the lines. Times gone by.
