As you would all imagine, normally at this time of year, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in this area are normally having lots of fun with outside meetings and starting to think about camps and pack holidays in the warm weather. However, since March, there have been no normal meetings and all camps and pack holidays have been cancelled. Despite this, Girlguiding has been continuing, but with quite a few changes.
As we cannot meet in person, leaders have been coming up with different ways to help girls carry on guiding. Many leaders have been sending out activities electronically, with girls and parents sending photos back of what the girls have done. Some units have been undertaking different challenges each week to go towards badges and other girls have been working towards interest badges such as ‘Helper’, ‘grow your own’ and ‘mindfulness’, all of which are particularly appropriate at the moment.
Other units have been meeting ‘virtually’ via Zoom. This gives girls and leaders a chance to talk to each other, play games and be creative. There has been a lot of very positive feedback about these meetings as it gives a bit of normality and structure back to the girls. It has been a steep learning curve for the leaders however, but we do embrace a challenge! One guide unit has even had a virtual sleepover with girls having different challenges to complete including making an inside den to sleep in overnight.
Hopefully, we will be back to meeting again in person soon, even if it will not be quite the same as we did before.
We have vacancies for girls in all age groups - visit the National Web site www.Girlguiding.org.uk/interested to put your daughter’s name down.
