Copp
Copp means a clump of trees. This is the highest point of the village and therefore could overlook all the surrounding lands. This is one reason for building Eccleston Chapel outside the village. The chapel was built to help the people that lived in this part of the world attend church as the closest was St Michael's on Wyre and there was little transport.
This map drawn in 1844 shows the church as Eccleston Church not Copp. It is also classed as a chapel. Notice that the school is in a different position. The Garth's farm has yet to be built. If you thought the road past the church is dangerous now, look what it was like then.
In this 1891 map little has changed to the present day.
