Western House (Sometimes called Southern House)
This is possibly a late 18th Century grade II listed building. It is situated in the Square.
It is a two storey rendered house with a thatched roof covered by corrugated iron. It has a main range of two bays and a cross wing to the left. The windows are modern. In the cross wing is a bay window on the ground floor, and a window with a segmental head above. On the right hand wall, adjoining Leckonby Street is a bricked up window.
It is possibly called Southern House as it is on the south side of the Square.
It was listed in 1984 and carries a legacy number of 185019. the building is believed to be on the 'at risk' register
Originally built as a house it has spent a lot of its life as a public house, the Bowling Green Public House.
The front og the house has 2 bays. On the ground floor the left-hand bay has a narrow window at the left of the door. Between bays on the ground floor is a 3rd window. The cross-wing, at the left, has a modern bay window on the ground floor and a window with segmental head above. The butchers shop is a later addition. Chimneys on right-hand gable and on ridge of cross-wing at junction with
main roof. Interior said to have exposed ceiling joists.
