160th Anniversary of the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864

On 11 March 2024 it is the 160th Anniversary of the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. There are events all over the city to mark the occasion:

  • Tours of the Flood graves at Wadsley, Loxley, Wardsend, Burngreave and the General Cemetery
  • Exhibitions - at High Bradfield, the Central Library and the General Cemetery
  • Talks and drama 
  • Guided walk of the Flood trail around Dale Dyke Dam
  • Memorials at Millsands and the General Cemetery

 

LOXLEY CEMETERY

At Loxley Cemetery we have the graves of 22 victims of the Flood.

On Sunday 10 March at 11am we are offering a guided tour of our Flood graves. 

The tour is free but booking is advisable; please email loxley.secretary@yahoo.com to book.

Exhibitions

  • Saturday 9 March, St Nicholas Church at High Bradfield, Sheffield S6 6LG, will host an exhibition of photographs of the path of the Flood by Martyn Pearson opening on 9 March. More of Martyn’s work will be on view in the Central Library on Surrey Street, Sheffield S1 1XZ. Free.
  • Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th March: Sheffield General Cemetery’s Samuel Worth Chapel will be open from 11-4pm on both days with displays of Flood memorabilia by Karen Lightowler and photographs by Malcolm Nunn, as well as tours of the Flood graves, memorabilia displays and advice on researching Flood victims.

Talks and drama

  • Monday March 4 at 7.30pm. Bradfield Archives will host an illustrated talk on “The Great Sheffield Flood” by Malcolm Nunn at Low Bradfield Village Hall, The Sands, Low Bradfield, Sheffield, S6 6LB. Cost £3.
  • Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th March: The Deluge will be performed at 2pm on both days in the Samuel Worth Chapel, General Cemetery.

Guided walk

  • Monday 11 March -Malcolm Nunn will lead the Great Sheffield Flood Anniversary Walk. It will start at 10.30am from Low Bradfield car park to Dale Dyke, returning around 1pm. Free of charge, just turn up. No restriction on numbers.

Memorials

  • Monday 11 March, 12 noon. There will be a laying of flowers at the Millsands Flood memorial (Outside Vulcan House, 6 Millsands, Sheffield S3 8NU)
  • Saturday 16 March: the Lord Mayor will be laying a wreath at the General Cemetery in memory of the un-named Flood victims in the Cemetery at 10.45am.
