Bulbs and Planting
DaffodilsThe Green hasn’t always had flowers and they certainly didn’t get there by accident because the only things that seem to self-seed are the weeds! The flowers are there because this is one of the activities the Friends of Sutton Green get up to. We are fortunate to work with the Parks Department at Sutton Council and they support our efforts and source the bulbs for us. All we have  to do is provide the digging!

Daffs on GreenOur fledgling Friends Group back in 2018 planted some daffodil bulbs around the trees that border path along Hallmead Road. Encouragingly, we had a few still pop up in spring. In early 2020 the re-energised Friends Group set to and planted literally hundreds of bulbs not only along the frontage of the Green but also around the Bushey Road entrance of Victoria Gardens. Last spring the ones on the Green all came up and what a beautiful sight they were! They cheered the whole area up.  The Victoria Gardens ones didn’t fare so well as all the weeds we’d dug up decided to regrow and rather smothered the display.

Bulb Planting Success

Bulb planting by our younger members

We planted bulbs ready for spring 2022 and then repeated the feat ready for 2023. We have planted literally 1000's of bulbs around Sutton Green, Victoria Gardens, All Saints Road and along the north end of the High Street towards Angel Hill. Our younger volunteers pictured here, with a bit of parental encouragement are shown planting bulbs on the grass in front of All Saints Church. Take at look at Sutton Green while all the daffodils are out - they cheer the place up no end!
