Willow Cottage

This was originally a cottage and is situated just to the west of the Square, in what iwas the original Square of the village.  Built in the 17th Century it is a grade II listed building, listwed as with many others in the village in 1984.  As its name suggests it was orginally a cottage but it has also been in later life an ice cream parlour, a restaurant and latterly a florist.

It is a rendered building of a wattle and daub cruck frame structure. It was orginally a single storey building but a half storey was added at a later date.  The builders of this half storey must have been small in height as the height of the upper floor is small, the ground floor height with the beams is not much better. The windows have plain reveals, and to the left of the front wall  is a modern bow window.

When the house was originally listed it had a thatched roof clad with asbestos sheets The modern day building has replaced this with a slate roof with skylights.  The original door to the building is in the middle of the front wall and on each side of this door are windows with plain reveals. Above are 2 windows partly within the roof this suggests an addition in the past to make a half floor for bedrooms. . At the left is a, modern bow window, with a door to its left and this was the main entrance to the restaurant. In modern times it lost its chimnet which was situated to the right of the bow window, although this chimney was perhaps a re-build as it was of modern brick.

The interior at the time of the listing was one large room which was entered by the main door.  It had 2 chamfered axial main joists and exposed common joists. Its left-hand wall is said to contain a cruck truss, exposed during alterations but now covered. There was a glass covering showing the wattle and daub structure of the building.
