Nannie Grace’s Kitchen

Nannie Grace's favourite meal was xitt-koddi-nustem—the classic Goan trio of rice, curry, and fish—always accompanied by a simple side of vegetable foogath or bhajis. In fact, many of the fish and vegetable dishes featured on this site are her exact recipes, preserved from the meals she loved and cooked most regularly.

Her passion for fresh fish meant that during the 1980s, her and Narciso's weekly shopping trips to Edmonton always included a stop at Lobo’s fishmongers on the High Street to see what the fresh catch was that week.

If you happened to drop by their house unexpectedly on a Saturday evening, you would almost always find them sitting down to:a beautiful spread of fried kingfish, ladyfinger and prawn caldeen, and steaming rice—inevitably accompanied by a glass or two of sherry.
