Grace’s Jeerem Meerem Sardine Curry
Ingredients
Jereem Meerem Masala
Grind All to a fine paste
1 small onion – chopped fine
5 Green Chillies
5 Garlic Cloves
½” ginger
6 Peppercorns
½” Cinnamon
4 Cloves
½” size ball tamarind soaked in hot water
¼ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp cumin

8-10 fresh sardines, wash, clean and apply salt |
Cooking Steps
- Grind all the Jeerem Meerem masala ingredients to a fine paste
- If using fresh sardines, wash and clean the fish and apply salt and keep aside.
- In a mortar and pestle crush the garlic, cinnamon, ginger and cloves to paste
- Heat oil in a pan, add crushed ingredients and sauté for 2 minutes on a medium heat
- Add 2 medium onions finely chopped, sauté until translucent
- Add 1 medium chopped tomato, cover and fry until soft and mushy
- Add the Jeerem Meerem masala prepared earlier and cook until the paste starts to thicken and releases oil
- Add 1 cup water, check consistency and add more if required, stir and cover and bring it to the boil.
- Add sardines, salt to taste and the slit green chillies and cook the sardines until done
Serve with plain white rice
