Ingredients

Jereem Meerem Masala

Grind all the following ingredients to a fine paste

1 small onion – chopped fine
2-3 Green Chillies
5 cloves Garlic
½” ginger
½ tsp turmeric
10 Peppercorns
1 tsp cumin seeds
1" Cinnamon
4 Cloves
½” size ball tamarind soaked in hot water

8-10 fresh sardines, wash, clean and apply salt
Or 4 tins Sardines in Oil

2 medium onions - chopped fine
1 tomato - chopped
2 garlic cloves – crushed
½” cinnamon
½” ginger
4 cloves
2 green chillies slit

Cooking Steps

Step 1
Grind all the Jeerem Meerem masala ingredients together to  a fine paste

Step 2
If using fresh sardines, wash and clean the fish and apply salt and keep aside.

Step 3
Crush the garlic and ginger to a paste

Step 4
Heat oil in a pan, add the cloves and cinnamon and ginger and garlic. Sauté for 2 minutes on a medium heat

Add 2 medium onions finely chopped, sauté until translucent

Add 1 medium chopped tomato, cover and fry until soft and mushy

Step 5
Add the Jeerem Meerem masala prepared earlier and cook until the paste starts to thicken and releases oil

Add 1 cup water, check consistency and add more if required, stir and cover and bring to the boil.

Step 6
Finally, add the sardines, salt to taste and the slit green chillies and cook the sardines until done.

 

Serve with plain white rice
