Young athlete leagues and competitions

Abingdon AC are part of three different track and field leagues, the Oxfordshire Junior League, the Midlands League and the Southern Counties Veterans League.

Leagues

League competitions are important to us as a club because we compete as a team to earn points to determine where Abingdon AC finishes in each league.

Championship competitions

Championship events are where you can win medals against athletes who are the same age and gender. There are different types and you may not be able to compete in all of those listed below so please read the descriptions carefully.

Oxfordshire County Championships

3/14 May 2017

County Championships are at a county level and everyone at Abingdon AC can attend. You need to apply on the Oxfordshire AA website and the deadline is roughly four to five weeks before the event. We will send an email and Facebook reminder around. You must compete if you wish to be selected to run for Oxfordshire.

South of England AA, Area Championships

The South of England AA Championships are a big Championship event but you do not require a qualifying time to compete. There will be some very fast people at these championships so if you are nervous about competing this may not be for you!

English Schools Championships

This is one of the most prestigious championships at a junior level. To qualify you need an entry standard and you need to attend a competition which your school will organise on the 9/10 June. Entry standards can be found under ES in the table on the ESAA website. There are usually 25 places in the Oxfordshire Team.

England Athletics Championships

Again this is a large championship event and there are qualifying times for this. These will be made available on the England Athletics website at some point during the spring.

Combined Events Championships

If you wish to be a mulit-eventer (so you will compete in lots of different athletics disciplines!) Then some of the events above may be of interest.

Open meetings

Open meetings are a good start for those of you who are nervous about competing. For open meetings, you put down your personal best for a given event and you compete against people with similar personal bests. This means you will probably compete against people of different ages and genders.

For most open meets you enter on the day, usually an hour before your event but please check individual clubs entry requirements via their websites for more details.

There are hundreds of open meetings across the country and a full list is available on the Powerof10 website - look for Open Meets.

Selection to compete for Oxfordshire

Some of you may be selected to compete for the county. Athletes are chosen from County Championship results and Powerof10 rankings. County matches this year are:
