Over the Fence Brings Neighbours Together on Loraine Estate
Our very first Over the Fence community gathering, led by Loraine Estate resident David and Mustafa, brought together around 30 residents for an afternoon of connection, creativity and conversation at the Loraine Estate Community Centre.
With the sun shining and residents enjoying both the outdoor green space and the community hall, the event created a warm and relaxed atmosphere where neighbours of all ages could come together, meet one another and share ideas for future activities on the estate.
Residents were invited to vote on three different themes they would like to see delivered as part of the Over the Fence Project:
- ๐ฌ Community Film Afternoon
- ๐งต Creative Corner
- ๐ Dance & Movement
The voting activity sparked conversations across generations and gave residents the opportunity to help shape future community sessions on the estate.
A special highlight of the afternoon was a fantastic taster session delivered by DanceWest, who led fun and gentle movement activities enjoyed by both younger and older residents alike. The session brought plenty of smiles, laughter and participation, showing how movement and music can bring people together across generations.
Residents also enjoyed live music from James, who performed on guitar throughout the afternoon, helping create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Alongside this, Bettina led a creative poetry-writing activity where residents reflected, shared thoughts and worked together on poems inspired by community, imagination and everyday life.
Some of the poems written during the session included reflections on sunshine, games, friendship and simple moments of peace. One resident wrote:
“I woke up this morning
the sun was shining”
Another poem captured the spirit of encouragement and togetherness:
“C’mon be brave
You will be safe”
Residents of different ages, from young children to older neighbours, took part in the workshop and shared their creativity in a supportive and welcoming environment.
With refreshments, pizza, music and meaningful conversations throughout the afternoon, the event captured the spirit of what Over the Fence aims to achieve — creating stronger neighbourly connections and tackling social isolation through simple, welcoming community activities.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered and supported the event. We look forward to seeing the Over the Fence project continue to grow across Loraine Estate.
