Communities flourish when people bring kindness, creativity and care into the spaces they share

Bettina

Bettina Schroeder is a valued resident member of Loraine Estate whose creativity, warmth and generosity help strengthen the spirit of community life. To neighbours, Bettina is not simply an artist — she is someone who quietly gives her time, support and encouragement to the people around her.

Born in East Germany and raised in Wolfsburg, Bettina later moved to the UK in 1982 and built an impressive artistic journey in London. She developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, installation, sound art, poetry, music, video and live performance, with her work exhibited across the UK, Europe and internationally. She has also spent many years teaching and supporting others through art and creative learning.

At Loraine Estate, Bettina brings that same passion and creativity into community life. She actively supports activities taking place around the estate and is known by neighbours as someone approachable, thoughtful and always willing to help.

One area where many residents see her contribution is through the estate gardening work alongside James Smith. Together with volunteers and neighbours, she helps support activities that improve shared green spaces and encourage residents to connect with one another. These spaces are about more than plants and flowers — they become places where conversations begin, friendships develop and neighbours feel part of something shared.

Bettina represents the values that make Loraine Estate special: people helping one another, contributing their skills and creating a stronger community through everyday acts of care.

For Bettina, creativity is not only something that belongs inside a gallery or studio; it is also something that can help people feel connected, inspired and welcomed.

"Great communities grow in the same way as gardens — through patience, care and people willing to nurture them."
