Some days remind us exactly what makes a community special, and our 3rd Annual Loraine Community BBQ was one of those days.
It was wonderful to see so many neighbours coming together to share good food, laughter, and conversation. Familiar faces caught up with one another, new neighbours were warmly welcomed, and residents of all ages enjoyed an afternoon filled with fun, friendship and community spirit. Best of all, the entire event was completely free, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to take part and enjoy the day.
The children had an absolute blast at the face painting table. A huge thank you to Michelle, whose creativity and talent kept children queuing all afternoon. From butterflies and superheroes to magical creatures and colourful designs, she transformed little faces into works of art and created memories that will last long after the paint has washed away. Her warmth, patience and artistic talent made the experience even more special for every child. The henna table, run by Aydah, was equally popular. Residents of all ages enjoyed having beautiful henna designs applied, making it one of the busiest attractions of the day.
There was plenty of excitement during the dance competition, with children enthusiastically showing off their moves and cheering each other on. The raffle prize draw added another fun moment to the afternoon, with lucky winners delighted to receive their prizes.
Another standout feature was the community collage table, led by Bettina. Children, parents and older residents all contributed to a shared piece of artwork, creating a colourful collage filled with memories that captured the spirit, creativity and diversity of our community.
What makes events like this so special isn't just the activities—it's the people behind them. Every burger cooked, every table set up, every chair packed away and every smiling face welcoming residents helped create an afternoon that brought our community together.
A heartfelt thank you goes to David, James, Abbey, Nour, Tracy, Josh, Mayra, Angelo, Nancy, Sweety, Maryam, Mrs Thomas, Aydah, Bettina and Kola. Your hard work before, during and after the event made this year's BBQ such a success. Whether you were organising, shopping, preparing food, cooking on the BBQ, setting up, serving residents, running activities or helping tidy everything away afterwards, every contribution mattered and was genuinely appreciated.
A special thank you also goes to every member of the Loraine Community Committee. Your dedication throughout the year keeps events like these alive and continues to strengthen the sense of community on our estate. Year after year, your commitment creates opportunities for neighbours to meet, build friendships and make lasting memories together.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to our local Ward Councillor, Claire Zammit. Claire has been an incredible supporter of the Loraine community, consistently encouraging resident-led projects, attending local events and championing the voices of local residents. Her continued support, enthusiasm and encouragement mean a great deal to our community.
Thank you as well to Councillor Jo Peck for taking the time to join us and spend part of the afternoon with residents. Your support and presence were greatly appreciated.
Most importantly, thank you to every resident and neighbour who came along. Whether you volunteered behind the scenes, brought your family, joined in the activities or simply stopped by for a burger and a chat, you helped create the warm, friendly atmosphere that makes Loraine Estate such a wonderful place to live.
Seeing children laughing together, neighbours sharing stories, new friendships forming and residents from different backgrounds enjoying each other's company is exactly what community is all about. Days like these remind us that a strong community is built through kindness, generosity and people willing to give their time for others.
