Eid al-Adha Brings the Community Together at Loraine

Eid-event-1

☀️ Blessed with beautiful sunshine and surrounded by colourful decorations, residents from across Loraine Estate came together to celebrate Eid al-Adha as part of the Loraine Health & Wellbeing Project's Cultural Events Programme.

Led by resident Ubah, with support from Mustafa, the event welcomed an incredible 98 residents from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and faiths. The afternoon was filled with laughter, friendship, food and meaningful conversations, reflecting the diversity and community spirit that makes Loraine such a special place.

The community centre was transformed with stunning Eid decorations, festive banners, balloons and displays that created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone attending.

Residents enjoyed a delicious selection of food, including traditional Somali cuisine, freshly prepared samosas, cakes and sweet treats. Sharing food together provided a wonderful opportunity for neighbours to connect, get to know one another and celebrate together.

One of the most popular activities of the day was the colourful henna station, led by Ayda, where children and adults enjoyed having beautiful henna designs applied throughout the afternoon. Outside, children played together in the sunshine, making new friends and enjoying the celebrations.

The atmosphere was made even more special by James, who entertained residents with his guitar, creating a relaxed and joyful setting that brought people together.

We were also delighted to welcome Councillor Claire Zammit and newly elected Councillor Jo Peck, who spent time chatting with residents, listening to local ideas and discussing ways to continue supporting community wellbeing and resident-led projects on the estate. Their attendance demonstrated the importance of working together to strengthen community connections and improve local opportunities for residents.

A particularly heartwarming moment came towards the end of the celebration when several children stood up and delivered short speeches explaining what Eid means to them, why it is celebrated and the values of kindness, gratitude, generosity and community that sit at the heart of Eid al-Adha. Their confidence and knowledge made for a memorable and inspiring conclusion to the day.

The event was a wonderful example of how cultural celebrations can bring people together, create new friendships and strengthen community cohesion across the estate.

A huge congratulations to Ubah for leading such a successful event and creating a welcoming space where everyone felt included and valued.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to David, Zabi, Ayda, Khadra and the many other neighbours who helped with decorating, setting up, welcoming guests, serving refreshments, tidying up and cleaning at the end of the day. Events like these are only possible because of the dedication and generosity of local residents who volunteer their time and energy for the benefit of the community.

Finally, thank you to all 98 residents who attended and helped make the day such a vibrant, joyful and memorable celebration.

Together, we continue to build a stronger, healthier and more connected Loraine community where cultures are celebrated, neighbours support one another and everyone feels they belong. 🌙✨
