No quarter was given at Buckfastleigh’s Valiant Soldier “The pub where time was never called” on a cold night in January.
Like a “Night at the Museum”, the old pub was transported back to its heyday in the 1960’s. A full house of noisy punters, a stocked bar of French wines, a selection of cheeses and some very handy electric heaters.
The Buckfastleigh Twinning had taken over the venue for its annual French Quiz, brainchild of quizmasters Anne Goulborn and Martyn Welfare. Contestants crossed épées over a fiendish array of questions. Where would you be if you were at “une grande surface”? What is “L’Hexagone”?
“We were especially pleased to welcome a team of Totnes twinners,” says Anne Goulborn. “It is always good to swap ideas with our twinning neighbours.”
The scores at the end of the evening were nail-bitingly close with all teams displaying impressive subject knowledge.
Everyone said how much they enjoyed the venue, surrounded by 1960’s pub memorabilia.
