Upper Eden Tithe Barns
The Tithe Barns in Great Musgrave (NY767132) and Crosby Garrett (NY760097) have both been restored recently for community use. They are close to their splendid Rectories (though Musgrave Rectory was demolished over 100 years ago). The history of the tithes and barns dates back many centuries, though the barns were rebuilt in the 18th century.
The Cumbria Vernacular Buildings Group visited the barns recently. They explored the buildings and their many features and also learnt why and how the barns were restored, including the history of the sites, fundraising and their present community and educational use. Natural England, the Heritage Lottery Fund and other local and national funding agencies were involved. The use of lime in the restoration was demonstrated. This was followed by lunch by the River Eden. The visit coincided with the annual Rushbearing procession from Great Musgrave to St. Theobald’s Church through the Church Field (there are four other Rushbearings in Cumbria still, in nearby Warcop, Ambleside, Grasmere and Urswick). Some rushes were laid on the earth floor of Musgrave barn.
