Musgrave Church Field is noted for its ancient trees

The Horse-Chesnut Avenue was planted in the 1890s. It now has bleeding canker and a number of trees have been lost. We plan to maintain the avenue for the future by planting Small-leaved Limes to form a new north side. We have pollarded the remaining chestnuts, mostly on the south side, to encourage new growth, leaving two by the gate. This gives the limes light to grow and when the chestnuts fail they will be replaced by new limes.

The Walnut Tree may be 200 years old and the oldest in Westmorland. This has been braced to preserve it, especially for the red squirrels.

This work has been generoulsy supported by the Hadfield Trust and the John Strutt Charity and Conservation Foundation.

Three panels about Musgrave Church Field, The Living Field and The River Eden are mounted on the walls of the Barn and are shown here.
