Ellesmere Bowling Club

Ever thought about being a film extra?

Well here’s your chance!. Gerard has booked some film experts from Ellesmere College to shoot our new promotional video, and we need you to provide the 'star-studded' background action. We’re looking for volunteers to play a few ends while the cameras roll. No acting experience required, just turn up with your bowls primed and ready on Tuesday 7th April at 11.00 am.

Hold onto your hats (and your hand sanitiser)!

Apparently, there’s a massive fertilizer pile-up in the Gulf thanks to the Strait of Hormuz being effectively "closed for business." This has caused a world wide shortage of fertilizer. But fear not! EBC has gone full secret agent, tracked down a stash of this "forbidden fruit" for our greens, and slapped it down on all grass surfaces.

For the next couple of days please take care and  wash your hands thoroughly after your game. We want the grass to grow like crazy, not your fingernails.

First Blood to the ‘A’ Team

The Malpas League season started with a bang! Picture a Bowling Green turning into a Hollywood showdown between Rambo and B.A. Baracus well that certainly paints a picture of the intensity out there.

It’s always a statement win when the A Team draws the First Blood in a local derby, especially with skipper Gerard 'Brooke-back-Mountain' keeping everyone cool under pressure. Here are the highlights of that "titanic tussle":

  • The New Guys: Bob ‘the Love Boat’ and 'Lucky' Tim clearly have ice in their veins, snagging wins on their debuts to set the momentum.
  • The Heavy Hitters: Clinical performances from GBB, the two 'Devastating' Daves, and 'Magic' Mike secured the overall victory for the A side.
  • The B Team’s Best: Heather 'The Hurricane' Petrie and Richard 'Rocky' Stocks (showing off those "silky smooth" skills) proved the B team won't be pushovers this season.
  • Spirit of the Game: Huge kudos to Keith Pritchard. Losing by a whisker to Dave C is tough, but acting as his "caddy" picking up forgetful Dave’s mat and carrying it for the rest of the day is the definition of class and sportsmanship.

With grit and passion like that on display so early, it’s going to be a long, competitive season for both teams.

The Ellesmere "Triple-Header"

GladiatorThe EBC 2026 season is kicking off with what could turn out to be a historic series of internal derbies.  It seems that the stars have aligned and the "fixture supercomputer" has scheduled Ellesmere A vs. Ellesmere B match-ups as the opening games for three major local leagues.

Since both teams will be playing on their home turf, the atmosphere at the club should be electric. It’s the ultimate test of depth for the A team and a huge opportunity for the B team to claim an early-season scalp. If you are not playing in any of these titanic derbies why not pop up the club to cheer on your favorite Gladiator.

A full 2026 fixture list is now available on the Ellesmere Bowling Club website under the "Teams" section, with printable copies also provided in the "Documents & Forms" area.

Funeral of Tony 'Oscar' Johnson

Oscar's funeral will take place on Wednesday 8th April at St Mary's Church, Ellesmere, starting at 12.30. Independence Day - 16th & 17th May

In May 1956 the Club purchased the land on which the bowls club is built from Lord Brownlow. This ended over a thousand years of the Ellesmere Castle site being owned by the Lord of the Manor. To mark the 70 years anniversary we are arranging a social event on the 16th May and an Anglo-Welsh bowls game on the 17th May. Further details can be found in the ‘Events Calendar’.
