Moskus Expedition 2018 - The Stauning Alps Completed

Arctic Club Award Expedition 2018

Objectives: first ascents in the Stauning Alps, climate change-related scientific research and to continue glaciological study of the Roslin glacier.

The Moskus Expedition was safely concluded on May 24th, with Leo and Matt returning to the UK after 5 weeks unsupported in Arctic Greenland. Both team members endured some tough moments, with bad weather costing the expedition a lot of time and necessitating an early evacuation from the mountains on May 12th. As a result the scientific component of the trip had to be modified, with some of the research conducted further east, in Liverpool Land. Mountaineering was more successful, with the team making two first ascents and very nearly a third. Overall, the experience was a fantastic one and, despite the many hardships and a close encounter with a polar bear, both Leo and Matt return as enthralled by the Arctic as ever, and enormously grateful to all the generosity and support that allowed their expedition to go ahead.

Greenland North Liverpool Land 2018 Completed

This was an exploration of the mountains in the North Sector of North Liverpool Land. All our objectives were achieved. Highlights include:

1. Eleven ascents of previously unclimbed summits
2. High level ridge traverses of the Hulya and Midnight peaks
3. New technical ascents on the Tower of Silence and Longridge Peak.

Supraglacial rock avalanches Completed

This scientific research expedition concluded on the 2^nd July 2018, after a short but successful sampling campaign. The expedition was only possible during a small window of opportunity, requiring enough snow to enable ski-plane landing, but also a lack of snow to allow sampling of rock avalanche deposits. This snow condition ‘balance’ gave us a two week window, which would potentially be threatened by the regions famously bad weather. Fortunately, we had an excellent 5 day weather window, allowing us to sample the Lamplugh rock avalanche deposit, but snowpack conditions prevented us traversing the Brady Icefield and reaching the La Perouse rock avalanche deposit. Overall, the trip was a success, providing a wealth of samples and some exceptional moments in a very remote and unexplored region of Alaska.
