Ice Alive

Greenland Ice Sheet

Joseph Cook takes a closer look at the microbial life that can be found all over the planet's glaciers and ice sheets. It is increasingly clear that this rich ecosystem affects the melt rates of polar ice and snow and could be accelerating climate change.

This is a collaboration between musician Hannah Peel and Arctic scientist Joseph Cook. After a series of conversations about the science of ice dynamics, Hannah composed a new piece of music designed to communicate the intricate nested feedbacks, sensitivity and almost paradoxical sense of power and vulnerability of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
