The photographs from Maurice Foulger’s collection displayed at the recent May Feast generated a lot of interest and comment. Many people who spent time browsing them referred to the diaries which Maurice painstakingly researched over many years.

These were a follow up to the Chronicles of Whitchurch compiled by C W Wilson and which concluded in the year 1909. Maurice’s six volumes cover the period from 1910 to 1950. Not everyone has had the opportunity of reading them because there were a limited number of copies.  The Editor is grateful to David Ryder Richardson of the High Street who, with a lot of effort, digitised the first volume of the diaries and this is now available on this web site.

Not only are the wild flowers showing their colours but so too are the numerous dragonflies that have found the pond to be a plentiful source of food.

The Maurice Foulger Archive

Think of one person from Whitchurch who did as much as anyone, and maybe more, to record the contemporary history of the village and it would undoubtedly be the late Maurice Foulger.

Not only did he have a passion for chronicling the day to day activities of the village in which he was born and bred, be it in photographs, film or print, but he also was an active member in many local organisations including the Parish Council, Whitchurch & Oving Youth Club and Whitchurch & Creslow Community Association, as well as being a champion of the Village Map and Millennium video.

Maurice was an inveterate hoarder of information which he stored at his home in Oving Road. He was however always pleased to share his collection with others and many of us remember the exhibitions he hosted in the Methodist Church.

His death in 2008 was a sad loss but his memory will live on in the archive recently left to the village by his children Heather and Ian.

Among the contents are copies of the Whitchurch Diaries; Old Whitchurch - photographs by Leonard Richardson; Bucks Fire Brigade Occurance Books (Whitchurch) 1942 - 71; Whitchurch in Camera 1959 - 81; Revival of Whitchurch Feast 1979; Whitchurch Community Association - assorted papers; a collection of film and cassette tapes recording key events over the past 30 and more years including early May Feasts.

Photographs from the archive taken at past May Feasts will be on display on 3rd May.

To compliment the archive Nick and Frances Stubbs have given a copy of Maurice’s A Short History of Whitchurch which is available on the village web site.

Good News for Whitchurch & Oving Youth Club

A generous donation from Winslow & District Local Area Forum (LAF) will allow the Youth Club to buy some exciting new play equipment for children of the Club. As well as obtaining some high tech electronic games a new table tennis table, badminton set, five-a-side goals and circus equipment will also be available by the end of March.

By meeting one of the key priorities of the LAF, namely to improve activities for young people, the Youth Club is now able to offer better facilities and hopefully attract more members.

The Club currently caters for children up to 11 years of age but it has always been the intention to extend membership up to age 15. For this to happen however the Club must recruit sufficient adult supervisors.

Whitchurch & Oving Youth Club has for decades been helping children of the two villages with the support of local people. If you can give your time to ensure the continued success of this valuable village asset then for more information or to register your interest please contact the Club Secretary, Matthew Smethurst, on 640758.

Affordable Homes get Go-ahead after crucial vote

At the Planning Meeting of AVDC Development Control Committee held on 11th March the application by Hastoe Housing Association for the erection of eight dwellings for affordable housing on land off North Marston Lane was considered.

It started with short presentation by the Planning Officer in which he outlined the application and addressed concerns expressed by villagers, particularly those about traffic outside the school.  There were then representations both for and against the application by villagers, Hastoe Housing and the architects which was followed with a thorough debate by Councillors of the Committee. In the vote that concluded the meeting there was a unanimous decision was in favour of the application.

Hastoe Housing said they were very pleased and hope that building work will commence sometime in April with completion due by year end.
