Volunteer Driving

Volunteering as a driver offers a meaningful way to assist your local community whenever help is needed.  It provides an opportunity to get out, connect with others, and perhaps hear interesting stories from new people. While you give your time, we will reimburse your mileage expenses.

How it's done

You must have a valid driving licence, be fit and well and your car must have a valid MOT and insurance, as well as being suitable for the car scheme work.  (Ideally a four-door saloon or estate car).

You use your own car to collect clients from their home, drive them to their appointment, wait for them (up to 2 hours) and return them home.  We have a mix of local destinations in Highcliffe, Christchurch and Bournemouth, plus some further afield (eg Poole, Southampton).

Bookings are managed by our volunteer coordinators who will phone you between 9.30am-12.30pm to enquire about your availability for a booking and if you accept it they will give you the client's address and contact details.

It's recommended that a follow up confirmation call to the client is made a day before the booked date.

The driver accepts the suggested donation from the client after the lift, records the amount donated on a mileage claim form and, after deducting the mileage expense, passes the balance to the HFiN Treasurer.

Insurance

Drivers are advised to inform their car insurance provider that they are a Volunteer Driver for a Community Interest Group (we are not a Registered Charity).

Most insurance companies cover volunteer driving at no extra cost.
