Who We Are

The Charterhouse Road Tenants and Residents Association (CRTRA) is a resident-led community organisation representing Southern Housing tenants and residents living within the Charterhouse Road community in Hackney, London.

CRTRA supports and represents residents living within:

  • Charles Utton Court Independent Living Accommodation
  • Mayne Court
  • Icarus Building
  • Apollo Building
  • Epsilon Building
  • Sigma Building
  • Omega Building
  • The Electric Blocks and Charterhouse Road

The Association was established to help strengthen communication between residents and Southern Housing while encouraging greater resident involvement, community wellbeing, and positive local change.

Why CRTRA Was Formed

CRTRA was formed in response to the growing need for a stronger collective resident voice within the community.

Residents wanted a more organised and constructive way to:

  • Raise concerns affecting the estate
  • Improve communication and engagement
  • Support community wellbeing
  • Encourage neighbourhood pride and inclusion
  • Work collaboratively to improve the local area

The Association aims to create opportunities for residents to come together, share ideas, support one another, and contribute positively to the future of the community.

Our Resident-Led Approach

CRTRA is led by residents, for residents.

We believe local residents are best placed to identify the needs, strengths, and priorities within the community. The Association encourages open discussion, respectful engagement, and collaborative working to ensure all residents feel heard and represented.

We are committed to:

  • Transparency and accountability
  • Respectful communication
  • Inclusion and equality
  • Positive community participation
  • Supporting residents from diverse backgrounds

Working in Partnership

CRTRA works collaboratively with Southern Housing and other local organisations to support positive community outcomes and neighbourhood improvements.

The Association aims to build constructive relationships that help address issues affecting residents, improve communication, and support practical solutions that benefit the wider community.

Recent resident-led matters have included:

  • Estate maintenance concerns
  • Environmental and hygiene issues
  • Community safety concerns
  • Resident wellbeing initiatives
  • Estate improvement requests
  • Community engagement activities

Committee Roles

CRTRA is managed by an elected resident committee consisting of:

  • Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Committee Members

Committee members work voluntarily on behalf of residents to support the running of the Association, organise meetings, communicate with residents and partners, and help coordinate community initiatives.

Our Community Values

CRTRA is committed to promoting:

  • Community cohesion
  • Inclusion and diversity
  • Respect and fairness
  • Positive partnership working
  • Resident empowerment
  • Safer and cleaner neighbourhoods
