Some of the TOPO steering group had a tour of the old main Post Office last week. It is in a sad state of disrepair and has been subjected to very unsympathetic updates over the years (false ceilings, partition walls, florescent lighting along a skirting board, an old-fashioned radiator installed in front of an old fireplace...) but "has potential", as estate agents say. Rubble and plaster and mess everywhere, but it's not unsafe and seemed structurally sound and dry. There are some lovely large rooms, including one with high ceilings and the rose windows you can see from outside, and the original ground floor post office, + lots of smaller rooms. Could make an attractive community space for small enterprises, a community cafe, meetings, pop-up shops and events...
Visitors to the developers' exhibition will have seen the Sorting Office, a vast and impressive space, which has cleaned up well since it was to let last year. Could be all sorts of things...
Interesting times!
