Bagmaya
85 Great Portland Street, First Floor, W1W 7LT, London (we operate purely online)

About us: "Here at Bagmaya we create sustainable backpacks, bum bags and yoga mat bags handcrafted with hemp in Nepal by people from disadvantaged communities. Our purpose is to help you in your journey towards a more sustainable life, bridging the gap between fashion accessories and sustainability. Because we believe you can look and feel awesome whilst having a positive impact on the world. Born from a volunteering project in a rural village in Nepal, we strive to create social change, educating our society whilst empowering local people in Nepal. We use hemp as our change-maker, since it is an invasive species in Nepal, and one of the strongest and most sustainable natural fibres in the world. We only use plastic-free packaging, made from 66% recycled materials and 100% recyclable. We also believe in upcycling, and that’s why we are giving a second opportunity to reused rice bags and nylon, which we use as internal layers in our bags to give them shape and make them weatherproof. All the colours that you see on our bags have been obtained from natural dyes made with flowers, to keep it as natural as possible. And if that’s not convincing enough, our website runs on carbon-neutral servers, plus we donate 10% of our profits to a local charity in Nepal called Yuwa, which strives to empower young people to lead change."

John Lewis / Waitrose
Kingston, Surbiton and national

About us: "We care about the environment. We make every effort to reduce our impact on the environment and to promote good environmental practice. See http://www.johnlewispartnership.co.uk/csr.html - and look out for the new green target symbol on products to identify the most sustainable ones. In April 2013 John Lewis launched its "sofa reuse scheme, which sees ‘end of first life’ sofas collected by the retailer from customers’ homes, then reused and/or recycled in conjunction with local charities [locally, Kingston Community Furniture] to support disadvantaged communities." Neways (Trisha Sadiq, independent local distributor)
Kingston, Sutton, national, international

About us: "Neways are a one-stop shop for over 200 health & wellness, personal & baby care and household products designed to help create healthy homes, including salon quality skin and hair care, dental hygiene, cosmetics, household cleaning products and the highest quality nutritional supplements. Caring for people and the planet is the core ethos of Neways. They avoid using over 3,000 controversial ingredients in their safety-conscious, environmentally-friendly, cruelty- and toxin-free formulations, and source ingredients from sustainable, ethical and (where possible) organic suppliers. Products are concentrated so you use less and they need less packaging. Eco-toxicity, bio-degradablility, heavy metal and safety studies are carried out to guide the scientific advisory board in their ingredient selection. All packaging is recyclable and phthalate free. Most paper-based packaging is made from recycled materials and Neways recycles 90% of the waste it generates. Literature is printed on paper sourced from sustainable forests and carries the recyclable symbol. Double-sided printing is standard to reduce paper consumption. Marketing teams are encouraged to use telecommunications to stay in touch and avoid unnecessary emissions from travelling to meetings.
As an independent distributor I have my own home-based low impact business; as I spend a lot of time in coffee shops chatting with people,  I make a point of selecting local, non-chain cafes to help support the local community."

Green awards and accreditations: Neways won the US "Anti-Vivisection" award six years running.

Lush Cosmetics
Market Place, Kingston, national

About us: "Environmental issues are at the heart of the company and trickle through to the decisions we make on a daily basis. For example, we use almond and olive oil - not mineral oil - partly because we think fields of trees make our lives much richer than oil fields. We keep on top of legislation and welcome new regulations that genuinely reduce our impact. We like to support environmental groups that take part in creative direct action to help change the law. We are committed to becoming more sustainable the more we grow, by using our buying power to drive positive change. We believe taking care of the environment is everyone's responsibility including all of our staff and our customers." Every Lush store, including the Kingstonone, has a member of staff responsible for green matters.

Green awards and accreditations: Green light and 15/20 on the Rainforest Foundation guide to palm oil content

TTK comment: "The shop that perfumes Kingston Market Place - nice for little presents and they wrap everything in paper, not plastic.
