History of Peel Moat Open Space

1971 - Peel Moat Recreation Centre opened on Buckingham Road, Heaton Moor

 

1997 - The astroturf pitch is added behind the leisure centre building

 

2008 – The astroturf pitch is closed to the public with floodlights, fences and pitch covering left in place

 

2010 – Stockport MBC recommends the closure of Peel Moat Recreation Centre due to new sports provision being provided by Life Leisure in Reddish. There is much opposition to the closure from the general public.

 

2012 – Stockport MBC confirm Peel Moat Recreation Centre is to close

 

February 2015 - Planning application for the demolition of Peel Moat Recreation Centre is approved and the centre is demolished

 

April 2015 - Planning application for the construction of new Key Stage 2 school accommodation, for St Thomas' CE Primary School, approved

 

2016 – New St Thomas’ junior school opened on the site of the recreation centre, including the grass playing field

 

2018 – Stockport MBC run a consultation on whether new play equipment should be installed at the grassed area adjacent to the astroturf pitch or in Heaton Moor Park. A fitness trail and playground are installed at Peel Moat.

 

2020 – Stockport MBC Councillors Sedgewick, Taylor and Reyness send out a survey requesting public opinion on a future use for the abandoned astroturf site.

 

Summer 2022 – Fences and lights are removed from the astroturf site.

 

October 2022Application for planning permission submitted for the importation of topsoil to cover the pitch and return it to a mowable surface which will allow the area in question to be a usable, turfed, public open space.

 

 January 2023 – Sport England object to the planning application to import top soil

 

 March 2023Soil Analysis carried out and concludes rubber crumb safe to leave in place

 

April 2023 - Friends of Peel Moat Open Space formed with the aim of developing the abandoned pitch into a community open space

 

May 2023 – FoPMOS organise local residents to carry out a litter pick and clear the pitch of 20 bags of rubbish and debris

 

 July 2023 - Decision made by SMBC to treat Sport England Objection as non-statutory and to proceed with the application to a final conclusion by the current decision target date of the 28th July 2023.

 

25 July 2023 - Planning Permission for removal of the astroturf is granted by Stockport Council Planning

 

19 September 2023 - Anticipated schedule for commencement of Phase 2 works received by FoPMOS
