Newt Survey - Jill's pond

Sunday 27 April 2014
20:30 to 21:30

The Lewes District Council Rangers are going to survey Jill’s Pond for newts on Sunday night and wondered if any of the Friends would like to come along? Newts are more active at night and at this time of year should have returned to their ponds to breed so newt surveying in ponds is best carried out in the spring. It essentially involves shining a bright torch in the pond, identifying and counting the newts. If there are Great Crested Newts present, it is not legal to disturb them eg pond dipping, except under the supervision of a licenced operator so it needs to be done in a controlled way – hence all going together on the same night.

If any of the Friends are interested it would be great if you came along.

We are meeting at the kiss gate on Firle Crescent that is below the pond at 8.30pm on Sunday 27th April, weather permitting (if it is raining and the water is disturbed, it is not possible to see into the pond).

Please bring a torch and warm clothes.

If you are able to attend please can you let me know prior to the event.  I hope to see some of you there.

Best wishes,

Daniel Fagan
