Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee and King Charles III Commemorative Garden
In 2022 we installed a specially commissioned bench to mark the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee, and in early 2023 we commenced renovation of this area of the Valley Gardens as a commemoration of these two royal events. Three star shaped beds had occupied this area, planted with ageing perennial shrubs and neglected for several years. The two outer, smaller star beds were cleared, levelled and seeded. The central bed has been reshaped into a circle, and a golden metal crown installed in the centre. We have chosen perennial planting for minimal maintenance, and watering, as there is no water source within easy reach. We have planted a variety of spring bulbs to provide spring colour, and the perennial planting will gradually fill out. Unfortunately, the commemorative plaques have suffered repeated vandalism and we are considering an alternative, vandal-resistant solution.
The next stage will be to tackle the large herbaceous border, for which we will need the Council's help.
