Activities

COVID - 19 Pandemic

Most of our activities have had to be suspended during the pandemic, but we will restart these when the situation permits.

Volunteering

You could volunteer to be one of the stewards at the Medieval Undercroft that is located under a shop in Guildford High Street. This is open on Saturdays and Wednesday from May to September each year. The Undercroft attracts a steady stream of passers-by who are intrigued by what is hidden beneath their feet. Most are astonished by the magnificent arched roof and the carved faces dating from the 13th century. The medieval clothes of the shopkeeper and the money counter based on roman numerals offer plenty to discuss and explain. Download the Undercroft volunteer leaflet for information on how to volunteer.

There are other opportunities to take part in the Inspired by Alice Day in August each year and the Xmas at the Castle Day in December.

Village walks

The guided visits to Surrey villages with local historian Jackie Malyon have come to an end as Jackie sadly passed away in 2020. We however have a new project of digitizing her photos of each village and their distinctive buildings. The photos and Jackies notes will be held in the Surrey History Centre archives in Woking for use by anyone who is interested in our wonderful county of Surrey.

 Exhibition visits

As a member, you will be invited to see new exhibitions at Guildford Museum, with an introduction to the exhibits by museum staff.

In addition, from time to time, we arrange for museum staff to show us items chosen from the museum store that are not normally on public display.

Outings and talks

If you are interested in local and national history, you will enjoy the events and talks organised throughout the year. Typically, the programme includes talks, outings to places of historic interest in the vicinity of Guildford, or further afield in London and neighboring counties. The Events page lists the forthcoming events at the present time.

Social events

We get together every six months or so for lunch or tea somewhere interestiing. Where this is outside Guildford, we arrange transport so that driving is not required.

In addition, Guildford Heritage hosts a party for volunteer stewards towards the end of each season in appreciation of their efforts taking care of the visitors to the Undercroft.

Funding support

Raising funding to support the museum is a fundamental aim of the Friends of Guildford Museum. Funds provided by the Friends are directed to areas not covered by Guildford Borough Council's Heritage budget. For example, one of the succesful funding projects in the past was to equip the Victorian Schoolroom with appropriate desks and class room equipment. These days, the Schoolroom is in constant demand by school's groups, allowing children to immerse themselves in school life in the Victorian era.

For over ten years, our funds were being held for use in the Museum Development project. However, now that the project has been stopped, we will be working with the Museum to make funds available for agreed priorities not coverned by their budget from Guildford Borough Council.
